This website asserts that funding for the Pearl River Basin Federal Flood Risk Management Project can and should be used to reduce flood risks broadly in the Jackson Metropolitan area.
The plan promoted by the Project's leading agencies is Alternative D, locally known as the "New One Lake." The New One Lake does not address flash flood risks that affect the most burdened communities in the Jackson Metro, namely those in the creek valleys of West Jackson. Instead, it may increase flash flood risks in these communities.
The New One Lake increases flood risks to communities in South Jackson, Byram, and Richland, which is completely contradictory to the Project's mission.
The New One Lake dedicates over $100 Million to constructing a new dam, which the Corps has acknowledged has no flood control benefits.
The work cataloged on this website was made possible through collaborations with nonprofit groups, including, Healthy Gulf, Pearl Riverkeeper, Mississippi Communities United for Prosperity, and the Audubon Society. The work is dedicated to residents of Canton Club, Parkway, and McLeod, 3 Communities in Northeast Jackson, who've worked closely with me to pursue a responsible and just implementation of the Pearl River Basin Federal Flood Risk Management Project.
